For Coach Richard Chimbo, coaching has helped him discover that patience is a virtue and listening is a two-way street. Coaching wasn’t always a part of the plan for Richard…when his oldest was playing U5, he felt that the coaching being given to the team was not skill or strategy driven. The urge to do better, coupled with the support of his family, led him to sign up as the assistant coach for the next season. With each of his kids getting into soccer, at one point, Coach Chimbo was coaching four teams!
When it comes to his coaching style, Coach Chimbo strongly feels that its all about developing defense and then moving onto the midfield position and lastly focusing on offense. This year, with his teams at the North Mississauga Soccer Club, they are working with a 3-3-2 formation, so they can start with defense and then move forward, helping the players win possession and develop their skills. A huge Ronaldinho fan, he tries to incorporate a never-say-die attitude with charisma and composure like that of the Brazilian legend. When asked about his most memorable moment with soccer, Coach Chimbo remembers the 2010 season where of the four teams he was coaching, his elder daughter’s team qualified and won the tournament while boys finished first and second in the tournament. Looking back at his high school run as a soccer player,
Coach Chimbo believes that while he was not a great player then, he rarely got picked but he always had a strong desire to play. His passion pushed him to work harder and he moved up in the field. He likes to remind his players that the number one thing in the game is passion and the second is the work you put in which will ultimately lead you to success.
With regards to his experience at North Mississauga Soccer Club, he feels that with the support, administratively and technically, the club helps him keep going and inspired him to do well. Coach Chimbo loves watching as the younger kids grow with the club and how the club itself is growing over the years. If someone ever offered him to change clubs, he says, and I quote “I would say no because you can’t offer any more than this club already offers”
From all the Panthers at North Mississauga Soccer Club, thank you, Coach!
THANK YOU COACH!
