Inclement Weather Policy
Please Note: Parents may take any reasonable action they deem appropriate for the safety of their child at any time.
The City of Mississauga just launched a new Field Status Page
City of Mississauga staff monitor playing conditions for City-operated baseball and softball diamonds, cricket and soccer pitches, football fields, and artificial turf fields. Updates will be posted to the Current Status section when a sports field is closed due to maintenance, weather or other reasons.
Field conditions can quickly change due to inclement weather and City staff may not be able to formally close all affected locations. In these cases, the permit holder, game official or coach is responsible for calling the conditions unplayable if they deem the facility is unsafe as a result of weather or physical damage to the sports field.
Avoid use of sports fields when there are puddles of standing water on the playing surface or water is sponging up around your feet when you walk on the field
Rain:
All soccer events will be played, rain or shine. The office will only cancel games ahead of their scheduled start time if the City of Mississauga closes the fields. They will do this by 4:00 pm at the latest. The office will post game cancellations on our NMSC social media accounts and website by 4:30 pm. All coaches in the effected division(s) will also be contacted.
Thunder/Lightning:
If there is no thunder/lightning before the beginning of the game; the referee will decide the course of action in consultation with both coaches before it starts. In our divisions without referees (U3-U8), the coaches of both teams have the authorization to suspend play or cancel matches in the event of thunder/lightning.
Once thunder/lightning occurs, the play must be stopped immediately. We will strictly observe the 30/30 rule. If the “flash to bang” is less than 30 seconds, play will be suspended for 30 minutes timed from the last flash or bang observation. If a game is played for at least 10 minutes into the 2nd half in our U13-U18 divisions, it will be counted as played and scores will stand. Any U13-U18 game cancelled due to weather will be recorded as a 1-1 tie.
Heat:
Games are not cancelled due to extreme heat, however, extra water and rest breaks will be implemented by Technical Coaches & Staff (U3-U8), and Referees (U9-U18). Coaches and Referees should meet prior to the start of the game to ensure everyone is aware.
